Disadvantages

In Genetic Engineering, there are a lots of crises or issues that arise between the scientists and citizens. The use of Genetic Engineering on plants, crops and food has also created a great debate among scientists and citizens.

There are several disadvantages of Plant Genetic Engineering towards environment :
  1. Widespread crop failure
  2. Promotes the use of herbicide
  3. Contains Bacillus Thuringienis(Bt)-toxins genes
  4. Destroying the agricultural system

Widespread Crop Failure
- All the seeds have identical genetic structures when a farmer plants genetically engineered seeds.
- Fungus, pest or virus grows which can attack this certain crop and there would be a widespread crop    failure.
- Wind, insects and plants are the examples of 'channel' that can carry genetically changed seeds onto close fields and lands.
- All crops either organic or non-organic are threatened by contamination that is different from other kinds of pollution because once the genes are out, they cannot be recalled.


Promotes the use of herbicide
- Responsible for great illness in farm workers.
- Herbicide can contaminate water supplies and kill all the weeds in a field, thus lowering biodiversity.


Contains Bacillus Thuringienis(Bt)-toxins Genes
- It can helps to killed ladybirds, bees and butterflies.
- If any Bt plant fall back to Earth, it can make earthworms and other organisms who live in the soil are threatened.
- The build up of toxic resistances can make the abnormality of equilibrium become difficult after the ecosystem has been disturbed. 


Destroying the Agricultural System
- Has not been fully tested and it is harmful because it uses material from organisms that have never been part of the normal supply of human food.
- Can cause unknown mutations in an organism.
- People can also have allergic reactions to genetically engineered food.
